I have the honor to enclose to
some Memoranda trawn up, as
I was informed when they were given into
my charge, by Mr May, Superintendent of Police in this Colony, upon the contents
of certain papers seized at the time that the Convict Mon Isoo. Wong was taken into custody.
I shall with your permission explain,
at length how it has happened that the Memoranda in question have not been Earlier produced. I must premise that, throughout, my statements are made to the best of my belief in their correctness,
The Honorable
M. J. Mereer Esquire

and that I cannot undertake to

think, in the autumn of 1837, return from Calcutta, whether I had accompanied Lord Elgin, that I was requested by His Excelleney Sir John Bowring. The Governor of this Colony, to examine a large collection of Chinese books and papers
a Memo: had been prepared by tr May. They had already been examined by Mr Mongan then a Student Interpreter, and in charge of the Chinese Secretary's : office during my absence with the -

I trust that I am guilty of no impropriety in availing myself of this opportunity to attempt an adjustment of the discrepancy to which Ir Bridges
has drawn my

Dc Bridges states on the 15th Febuary,

It is quite certain that I did not-
any report upon the papers examined by Mr Mongan. I have shewn above why I did not, but I kept the papers until the lask moment in the hope of having
interval of leisure which never came, and.
abandonment ultimately of my
intention to examine them was I must
think, due to this circumstance, and not, as Dr Bridges believes me to have slated, to the determination of the Council to let the law latte its course with
Ma Isoo Wong. This is, however, a Minor point of interest chiefly to myself. Gr. Bridges is perfectly correct in his main fant viz: that no report
was made
and the intention of making one relinquished. I need not demonstrates that Mr.
was equally correct in starting
that the Memoranda now enclosed
